Choose a time tracker by the file you need.
A documentation-based comparison of DeskTime and Time Doctor export workflows, with limitations, fair alternatives and a before-you-buy check.
Shortlist by required fields, role access and a demonstrated export. DeskTime and Time Doctor both document export tools; neither documentation set proves your receiving system will accept the result.
Compare the same task
This comparison concerns preparing understandable work records for another process. It is not an overall ranking of employee monitoring, security or payroll features. We inspected public documentation, not paid accounts. Start by giving both vendors the same fictional fixture and recipient specification. Ask for the intended plan and role to be used, and retain the resulting sample.
What the current documentation establishes
Checked September 23, 2026. Product capabilities and plan access can change. Treat the items below as a shortlist aid; unknown behavior stays unknown until demonstrated.
Scroll horizontally to compare every column.
| Requirement | DeskTime | Time Doctor |
|---|---|---|
| Output | CSV or Excel | CSV, XLS or PDF |
| Grouping | Daily, weekly or monthly options | Daily per user or totals per user |
| Role boundary | Employee: own records; team administrators: managed team; company administrators/owner: all | Custom Export: owners, admins and managers |
| Specific caveat | Custom export requires user name and email | Attendance absent from totals layout; unusual activity requires Premium/add-on |
| Still to prove | Recipient-required fields, correction handling and plan fit | Recipient-required fields, correction handling and plan fit |
When each deserves a closer look
Consider DeskTime when its role-scoped export and grouping model match your specification, and you can demonstrate acceptable capture settings. Consider Time Doctor when selectable duration formats and daily versus total layouts help the handoff; verify the necessary plan for any additional fields. Neither is an automatic recommendation. If monitoring is unnecessary, compare a basic timer or keep the existing approved spreadsheet instead.
What can disqualify either product
Reject a candidate for this workflow if a critical field is unavailable, a required correction cannot be traced, or capture settings cannot meet the team’s agreed boundaries. Treat unresolved integration behavior as a blocker, not a positive feature. Check the full operating cost, cancellation terms and trial conditions directly before committing. We do not start a trial or make a purchase on the reader’s behalf.
